Established in 1818, the New York State Library is comprised of two major units: the Research Library and the Division of Library Development. The Division of Library Development works in partnership with the state's 72 library systems to bring cost-effective, high quality library services to the millions who use New York's 7,000 academic, public, school and special libraries. Staff experts work with librarians, trustees, public officials, and local leaders to solve problems and find new ways of making library services and resources available to their communities.Ìý Library Development administers more than $130 million in state and federal aid to New York's libraries and helps libraries take full advantage of federal and private funding programs.

The Assignment (Description of Job): 

The State Library's Programming and Outreach Graduate Student Intern position provides a unique opportunity to gain a broad understanding of New York's 7,000 libraries, 72 library systems and the services they offer New York residents.Ìý

The Graduate Student Intern will coordinate weekly family-friendly Library programming onsite at the Cultural Education Center.Ìý The Intern will also support the Division of Library Development's Outreach and Statewide Services teams, providing assistance on statewide initiatives on a range of topics including digital equity, library accessibility, and DEI.Ìý The intern will support the creation of new training modules for librarians, library workers, and library trustees.ÌýÌý

Activities for all of the students include, but are not limited to:Ìý research; data collection, analysis and presentation; webwork and social media such as preparing website materials, facebook, blogs, etc.; program planning and coordination; contacts with stakeholders; meeting planning and organization; exhibits and presentations; report writing; grant-related activities; use of online systems; PR and communications, etc

The Graduate Student Intern will have opportunities to learn about New York State's statewide library infrastructure of 72 library systems and 7,000 libraries, as well opportunities to learn about the operation of the State Research Library. Student will learn about statewide library programs, policies and procedures from Library Development staff and State Library/OCE leadership.Ìý Student will meet with State Librarian and other members of the State Library’s leadership team individually to learn more about the unit's operations, policies and procedures.Ìý Students learn about state and federal programs related to improving library services. Students will receive tours, participate in team, unit, Library wide, OCE and SED staff meetings, attend Regents meetings and other professional meetings as appropriate, to help them better understand the scope of New York State Library statewide services and programs. Students receive training in agency/office policies and procedures, use of agency/office hardware and software tools, SED email, numerous online information and data systems and other tools needed to carry out their assignments and projects

Desired Skills, Abilities, & Educational Background: 

This position is open to matriculated graduate students. Preference may be given to those who are pursuing a Masters in Library or Information Science. However, any graduate student interested in education, public policy, planning, research and management, political science and government, or communications and marketing would find this position of interest.

Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills and the ability to work independently are important

Schedule/Hours: 

Students must be able to work a minimum of 15 hours and must be available Wednesday mornings for public programs.ÌýÌý

Paid Internship Hourly Rates: 

Undergraduate students will be paid $15/hour and graduate students will be paid $18/hour. For all offices located in NYC or Westchester, Suffolk, or Nassau Counties, undergraduate students will be paid $16.00/hour and graduate students will be paid $19.00/hour.
