Student Assistant (Researcher Services)

Program Office/Description: 

The New York State Archives (NYSA) Archival Services bureau ensures the preservation, accessibility, and use of New York’s historically valuable records. We accomplish this by managing the State Archives facility, which houses the archival records of state government.Ìý

The New York State Archives Researcher Services unit provides access to over 180,000 cubic feet of New York’s historically valuable records. We provide access to records through on-demand scanning, on-site research and ready reference responses to specific questions.Ìý Annually we provide access to nearly 20,000 researchers.

The Assignment (Description of Job): 

Assist professional staff in the Researcher Services unit in responding to reference inquiries.

Locate and copy records relating to:
Military records searches
Land records and letters patent
Correctional services inmate look ups
Motion picture film scriptsÌý
Daily records retrievals from secure storage

Assist with records moves as needed
Participate in collections management activities such as re-housingÌý
Assist with cataloguing work to enhance our online Finding Aids
Staff the registration desk in our Research Room, which is shared with the Manuscripts and Special Collections of the State Library
Perform other activities as assigned

• Attend workshops and webinars on a wide range of professional archival practices

Desired Skills, Abilities, & Educational Background: 

Qualifications:
Basic level of comfort with MS Office.Ìý
Ability to lift 40 pounds.
Strong research skills.
Comfort level working independently and in teams, as well as with other departments.
Strong communication and writing skills.

Schedule/Hours: 

Open schedule between Monday through Friday 8:30AM to 4:30PM

Paid Internship Hourly Rates: 

Undergraduate students will be paid $15/hour and graduate students will be paid $18/hour. For all offices located in NYC or Westchester, Suffolk, or Nassau Counties, undergraduate students will be paid $16.00/hour and graduate students will be paid $19.00/hour.
