The Region 2 Comprehensive Center Presents Report on Graduation Measures Initiative Review to Support Work of the Blue Ribbon Commission
Report Includes a Literature Review, State & International Policy Scan, and Compilation of Stakeholder Feedback
The Region 2 Comprehensive Center, led by WestEd, today presented its report, 鈥Graduation Requirements and Measures,鈥 to the Board of Regents, Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced. The report presents the findings of a literature review, a state and international policy scan, and a summary of stakeholder feedback. The report鈥檚 findings will inform the work of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Graduation Measures.
Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr. said, 鈥淲hen we talk about what earning a high school diploma means, we must also identify the barriers that may exist and eliminate existing barriers to high-level academic achievement by students. Our students are full of potential, and, as educators, it is our job to engage them effectively in fulfilling their potential. The Blue Ribbon Commission will reflect on how best to foster student learning and how they can best demonstrate what they have learned and the skills they have acquired.鈥
Commissioner Rosa said, 鈥淭he current one-size-fits-all approach to education is not equitably serving every child in our state. This report helps us to explore the latest research and the experiences of other states and countries so we can see what is working to meet the needs of every student. Stakeholder feedback underscored the importance of equipping students with the skills and competencies necessary to be successful wherever their post-secondary path leads. I thank our partners at WestEd and our Department staff for their work on this critical endeavor.鈥
The report focuses on three categories: a literature review; a state and international policy scan; and a compilation of feedback from the public and stakeholders via surveys and more than 30 stakeholder meetings.
The report 鈥淕raduation Requirements and Measures: A review conducted for the New York State Board of Regents and the 麻豆视频鈥 will serve as a first step to inform the discussions and recommendations of the Graduation Measures Blue Ribbon Commission regarding graduation requirements, and policies that prepare all New York State students for success in college, career, and civic life.
