Getting Ready for Implementation of the World Language Standards: Administrators’ Perspectives

The Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL) of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ (Â鶹ÊÓƵ) presents this next webinar in its 2023 Professional Learning Series:ÌýÌýGetting Ready for Implementation of the World Language Standards:Ìý Administrators’ Perspectives.ÌýÌýThis webinar is offered free of charge for world language educators and administrators working and studying in New York State educational institutions.

Webinar description: ÌýThis session will share experiences and lessons learned from two districts’ journeys toward implementation of the revised Â鶹ÊÓƵ World Language Standards. Learn about effective and practical strategies to lead and support World Language educators as they incorporate the revised standards in their classrooms. Familiarize yourself with the resources created by the Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages to guide curriculum alignment and instructional shifts.

To receive a certificate of completion (including a CTLE certificate), NYS educators must view the recording of the webinar (see link above) in its entirety and then answer at least seven out of ten questions correctly on the post assessment.Ìý If the minimum required score (7 out of 10) is achieved, the educator will receive a certificate via emailÌýwithin an hour.Ìý For the convenience of our World Language educators, there are multiple versions of the post assessment available, should the required score not be achieved on the first attempt.Ìý Educators may take each version of the post assessmentÌýonce.

  1. Educators may take each version of the post assessmentÌýonce.ÌýÌýCredit will not be given for taking a single version of the post assessment more than once.Ìý
  2. Credit will not be given forÌýmore than one passing scoreÌýon any of the post assessments for a webinar (listed below)Ìýin a single academic year.ÌýÌý
  3. Educators may receive credit for viewing the webinar recording and passing a post assessment once in each academic year and are encouraged to take a different version of the post assessment on a yearly basis to review and test their knowledge of the webinar's content.Ìý
  4. It is the responsibility of the individual educator to keep track of the information on the professional learning they complete each year, including the number of CTLE hours.

Webinar presenters:

William Anderson has been a NYS public school educator for over 30 years. He earned a B.A. in Spanish and Political Science and an M.S. Ed. in Foreign Language Education from Syracuse University. Bill earned his Educational Leadership credentials from SUNY Stony Brook. He is the K-12 Curriculum Associate for World Languages and English as a New Language in the Massapequa School District and the Director of World Language Education at Hofstra University. His leadership experience includes serving as the President of NYSAFLT in 2014, serving on the NECTFL Board of Directors from 2016-2019, and serving on the ACTFL Board of Directors from 2016-2018. He currently serves on the Â鶹ÊÓƵ World Language Content Advisory Panel.

Shawnna Sweet is the Assistant Director for World Languages for the Greece Central School District, just outside of Rochester, NY.Ìý She began her career in education as a teacher of English to Speakers of other languages (ESOL) in the Greece Central School District, and then worked as a professional development specialist with the Mid-West Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (RBERN). Shawnna has also taught graduate courses in TESOL at Nazareth College and is the 2024 President Elect for NYS TESOL. She holds a B.A.in English with a minor in Secondary Education from St. John Fisher College, an M.S. in TESOL from Nazareth College, and Advanced Certificates in School Building and District Leadership from the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester.Ìý She currently serves on the Â鶹ÊÓƵ World Language Content Advisory Panel, Seal of Biliteracy Task Force, and ELL Graduation Task Force.
